Vanity basins come in a wide range of shapes and sizes so finding one to fit in with the bathroom style you want to achieve is quite easy if you know what to look for.
But there are certain things you will need to know to help make your selection easier.
1) What type of basin do you need?
- There are many types of basins available depending on your particular situation.
- Do you need a basin to fit onto a vanity unit? Or do you just need something small without cupboard space, like a wall mounted or pedestal basin?
- Are you looking to make a design statement, with perhaps a floor standing basin?
- How do you use the basin? Do you need something mainly for washing hands in a powder room or do you need a deep basin for shaving in?
2) What is your tapware configuration?
- Are you changing the existing plumbing? If your plumbing is in the wall, for wall mounted tapware, and you are not changing the plumbing then this will affect the type of basin you choose.
- Basins will be available with either: No Tapholes, 1 Taphole or 3 Tapholes.
- If your plumbing is located in the wall then you will need a basin with No Tapholes.
- If your existing tapware is located on the basin, you will have a choice, in the case of 3 piece tapware, to remain with this type or change to a single lever mixer which is very easy to do.
- If you’re starting from scratch then the choice of tapware is completely yours and it will then come down to your particular preference and design ideas.
- The size basin you choose is going to be determined by a number of things, mainly the available space you have and the use the basin gets.
- For basins going onto a vanity cabinet you will need to take into consideration; the length and width of the benchtop, the position of any drawers to allow for the waste pipe, the height of the cabinet for above counter basins and any allowances for bench mounting tapware.
- For wall mount and pedestal basins you will need to know the length of the wall space available.
- Also pay attention to the maximum projection, distance out from the wall, your basin can be.
- Depending on the use the basin is going to get you may need to choose a basin that is either shallow or deep. Think about how, and what, you will be using the basin for.
